Abstract

|
Two cases of typhoid myocarditis were reported and the literature on the subject was reviewed. The first case, a 33-year-old housewife, was admitted with a history of about 40 days fever and recent melena. Examination revealed ventricular gallop rhythm, cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure. The electrocardiogram showed the second degree heart block of Mobitz type I. The, second case, a 35-year-old male, entered the hospital with about. two weeks history of fever. The electrodiogram revealed complete heart block with atrioventricular junctional rhythm, which lasted for five days, followed by several days of the second degree heart block of Mobitz type I. Apparent1y there were no signs of heart failure. The authors feel that the lack of interest by many physic ans is largely responsible for the rarity of reported cases of typhoid myocarditis even in the areas where typhoid fever is still quite prevalent.
